Dominican friars first arrived in China in the middle of the thirteenth century, during Thomas Aquinas' own lifetime, but there was no institutional presence until the seventeenth century when the freshly arrived friars immediately prioritized the question of how the Catholic Faith might engage with local philosophical and religious beliefs. In intervening years Dominicans from across the world have maintained a lively interest in questions concerning the promotion of Catholic thought in the Chinese speaking world and today many friars continue to follow St Thomas' example in bringing Catholic teaching into contact with other traditions in thoughtful and mutually enriching encounter.

Established in 2025 the Thomas Aquinas Center has carried on the work initially begun by the Vice-Province of China in collaborating with local universities and groups in Taiwan as well as institutions across the world in organizing public conferences and lectures and is currently expanding this work through bringing together active scholars to form a lively Dominican presence in the ongoing conversation between Western thought and Chinese intellectual traditions.
